About FreeROMsDownload

FreeROMsDownload started as a personal archive of console game data — platform specs, region codes, checksum hashes, and emulator notes that were scattered across a dozen spreadsheets and forum posts. This site organizes that research into a clean, searchable reference anyone can use.

Why ROMs and why now

The majority of console games released before 2005 are commercially unavailable. No digital storefront sells them; the cartridges degrade. ROM preservation is the only reason these games still exist for anyone to play. This site catalogs what exists and helps people find compatible emulators.

What we list and what we don't

Every entry in the vault includes the ROM's canonical name, platform, region, file size, and emulator compatibility notes. We link to external mirrors — we do not host any ROM files on this server. If a rights-holder asks us to remove a link, we do so promptly via the DMCA procedure.

Editorial standards

Platform listings are researched against the No-Intro and Redump databases, which are the preservation community's gold standard for verified, untampered dumps. Emulator compatibility notes come from RetroAchievements and EmulationGeneral wiki. We cite sources in guides; we update listings when the community finds errors.
